A good argument against Christianity...

...Or at least one that had me stumped for several years is this: How could a loving God send those who do not believe in him to hell? Wouldn't that mean God is not loving. I relate to non-Christians and even Christians who ask this question. The first time it popped up in my mind was during high school when I was going through my ultra cynical "Nonconformist" phase. I feared that Christianity was nothing but an ancient scam to make me into a robot. Even worse, I thought God could be the evil mastermind behind the whole thing. Baisically what the ultimate choice became in my mind was either lose my individuality or go to hell.
This theme of nonconformity became an obsession more than a way of life. I was angry and quick to accuse people of conforming or trying to make me conform. I had a dream reflecting this state of mind during my Junior year of college that I was being chased by the government for being different. They cornered me on a cliff and were closing in quick when a gigantic golden colored bird flew up from below the cliff. He told me to jump onto him, promising me freedom. The dream ended with me surrounded by gold coming from the bird and gaining a sense of safety. As I woke, I knew that bird was what I hoped God was like: a powerful, beautiful being that desired for me to be myself.
There was still that original question in my mind, though I held onto the idea of that dream. The next few years up 'till now have been rough for me Spiritually speaking. My doubts kept coming and I admit I did work at disproving them. Thankfully I recently was inspired to finally do the work. Here's what I came up with:
Based on certain implications that can be drawn fromthis argument God is selfish. That's why he craves worship so much he sends nonchristians to hell. A loving God would let everyone into heaven--everyone who was good anyway. A counter argument to this I've heard often is that God can not live in the presence of sin. So who is right? The key to this mystery is the proposed way to heaven: Through the sacrifice of God as the Son Jesus on the cross. Maybe God could bring all "good" people to Heaven the way we think of it (And let me just say I think God is fair with those who have never heard of the true Jesus.) Bottom line: I think the standard that has been set for the afterlife was set for a reason. God killed a part of himself to make it possible. The universe and all existence would have been worse off if it wasn't this way. Otherwise I believe God would have loved to avoid the sacrifice.
